Family Shoot in Padley gorge

A cold but bright February morning and time to head to Padley Gorge near Hathersage to try out a new location for a family shoot.

After seeing their car arrive, i popped out to say hello and introduce myself to the kids, whose first comment was definitely a quizzical “Are you the photographer whose going to take our photos?” – I guess that coming over without a camera was a little confusing!  After zipping up warm coats and tying those boot laces, we picked up the camera and ventured down the steps to the top of Padley Gorge.

It was a bright day, but the wind had a decisive chill about it and so the protection of the trees, at least to start with seemed like a good idea.  Off down the path to the left, leading up to a gorgeous wooden bridge over the river and of course, pooh sticks needed playing.

(Phoebe also decided a little dance was needed, which obviously little brother had to join in with!)

The rocks at the top of the little falls are a place I have spent many hours with my boys, jumping over, stepping from one stone to the next, clambering over the bouldlers, and on warmer days, splashing and paddling.  Although today was not a wild swimming day, he burbling water still holds a fascination for most and Phoebe headed straight for the edge of a rock to take in the view, while Alfie found the odd muddy puddle!

With so many gorgeous tree trunks and rocks just off the main pathway as you head down into the wood, we meandered our way through, stopping to climb and hide at times behind moss covered tress and boulders – letting the kids lead the way and chatter as we did.  A gentle suggestion to try jumping off that tree stump or out from behind that tree works wonders mixed with just letting them explore.

The tree of money is always a great talking point, as well as a chance to touch and find the odd moment of concentration – Alfie managed to wiggle a coin or two loose as well, while we took a couple of shots of mum and dad. Whispering to Alfie if he thought mum and dad might have  a little kiss, he happily pottered off to ask with a giggle.

Me and Phobe then decided a little adventure off track was in order, and she led us down to the rivers’ edge – Alfie wasn’t far behind and very independently managed his way down safely, refusing a hand to help – if big sister can do it, so can I – was certainly his motto.  He reminded me so much of my youngest, who was exactly the same 0 well, as long as you swop big sister for big brother!

A wander back to the rocks meant we had enough warmth to brave the wind and clamber over the heather to explore the multitude of caves and rocks on top of the tors, just right for hiding in and, of course, the obligatory leaning into the wind! – Well, when it’s strong enough, it has to be done!

A quick family shot or two on top of the rock formations and it was time for lunch – and time for me to head home, via the delicious deli in Hathersage and start editing.

Doing Family Shoots in the Peaks brings a lot of fun and opens up the options to folk from further afield who love being outdoors, and would like to capture their time together.  Drop me a message if you’d like to have a chat about organising some time together outside.
